Be my guest (kè)(客)

When someone says "thank you" (xiè xie)(谢谢), in English we usually say "don't mention it" or "you're welcome". A common reply in Mandarin is "bù kè qi" (不客气), which basically means "no need to be polite".

So "bù kè qi" (不客气) means polite - made up of "guest" (kè)(客) & "vapour" (qi)(气). (You can intellectualise in any way you want how "guest vapour" means "polite" :-)

There are a number of other words which begin with "guest" (kè)(客), and the whole point of WordPacks is that it makes it easier to memorise words, understand words, and use words.

Be my guest, and learn these ...
  • kè qì (polite) 客气 (guest vapour)
  • kè rén (guest) 客人 (guest person)
  • kè diàn (inn/hotel) 客店 (guest shop/hotel)
  • kè chē (bus) 客车 (guest vehicle)
  • kè hù (customer) 客户 (guest door/family)
  • kè hù fú wù (customer service) 客户服务 (guest family service)
  • kè tīng (living room) 客厅 (guest hall)
Just some quick things to note:
  • if you're a beginner, then perhaps learn these words over two or three days
  • if you're advanced, you could look up words which end in kè, then try this search
  • and although there are more commonly-used words for "bus", the construct is nevertheless useful to learn
